Blanche Jenkins was born to William J. Hickmon and Edna S. Irwin on August 16, 1922, in Sloan, Iowa. Blanche was raised on the farm along with her two brothers, Jack and Pete, and two sisters, Frances and Helen. Helen’s twin sister, Ellen, passed away at 3 days old.

She was a graduate from Sloan High School with the class of 1940. She was the last living member of her class.

Blanche married Donald Lee Clayton in January 1942. Together they had seven children: Donna, Denny, Donald, Kevin, Roxanne, Greg, and Jan. Donald passed away on November 4, 1959, after a vehicle accident. She raised her seven children and worked as a waitress at the Sloan Café for many years. She also worked for Watson Locker in Sloan later in life.

On October 7, 1967, Blanche married Mitchell Armstrong. He passed away on October 10, 1973.

Blanche and Roger Jenkins were married on January 4, 1975. They had many adventures in their nearly 49 years together.

She loved to bowl and was on the mixed league and ladies league for many years in Sloan, Sergeant Bluff, and Hornick. Blanche also loved to cook and garden. She took pride in her flowers and always had many comments from neighbors on how beautiful and unique her flowers were. For many years Blanche and her good friends, Bertha Nelson and Deloris Goodwin, traveled to Pleasant View Nursing Home in Whiting to assist the residents with BINGO, until they retired due to Covid. The three of them shared lighthearted jokes about aiding the elderly, playfully acknowledging the irony of Blanche, at 98 years old, helping the elderly.

Blanche belonged to the First Christian Church, now the Community Church of Christ her entire life. Her favorite hymns were “The Old Rugged Cross” and “Great is Thy Faithfulness. “The Lord is My Shepherd” was her favorite Bible verse. She belonged to the Mary Circle for many years and served as their treasurer. Blanche also taught Sunday School, Bible School, and sang in the Church choir. She proudly sat with her grandson, Steve Olson, on Sundays to worship her Lord & Savior. In recent years Blanche was able to continue to enjoy online church services with

her neighbor, Christy Zanter, and together they would sing along and take communion with the rest of the congregation.

Survivors include her husband of forty-eight years, Roger Jenkins; children, Donna Zuetlau, Don Clayton, Kevin Clayton, Roxanne Hyden, and Jan Hubert; many grandchildren blessed Blanche and she welcomed each and every one of them as if they were her 1st. Her seventeen grandchildren include Steve, Pam, Gary, Don, Chris, Amanda, Scott, Dawn, Kristi, Melody, Glori, Andy, Shawn, Nicki, Emily, Tyler, and Kylea; forty-two great-grandchildren include Justin, Garrett, Amber, Devin, Derrick, Halee, Megan, Sam, Matt, Chloe, Austin, Karli, Anyslie, Grace, Glenn, Taylor, Brayden, Jayden, Nolan, Christian, Mason, Mia, the twins Ian & Ella, Sadie, Levi, Hannah, Emma, Jacob, Sarah, Ashley, Blake, Anna, Lucas, Kody, Kim, Kayla, James, Jack, Charlie, and Nevaeh; twenty great-great-grandchildren (and 3 on the way), include Chase, Lily, Braxton, Tre, Alaina, Leland, JD, Dylan, Lincoln, Mads, Valen, Jaxon, Zachary, Belle, Halsey, Graham, Raeleigh, Cameron, Luna, and Abel. We will welcome Baby Lutt (Emma), Baby Thole (Megan), and Baby Holbrook (Haley) in the next few months. She is also survived by her three daughters-in-law, Judy Clayton, Cathy Luttig Clayton, and Cathy Cole Clayton and one son-in-law, Steve Hubert.

Blanche was preceded in death by her parents, William and Edna (Irwin) Hickmon; two brothers, Jack Hickmon and Pete Hickmon; two sisters, Frances Rockette and Helen Tatum; son, Greg Clayton, on June 23, 2017, and son, Denny Clayton, on March 2, 2023; daughter-in-law, Marlene Clayton; and sons-in-law, Bob Hyden and Ron Zuetlau.
