College sports notebook: Rutan throws perfect game in collegiate debut, named ASUN Pitcher of Week – The Republic

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Maddi Rutan threw a perfect game in her collegiate debut on Thursday to lead Eastern Kentucky to a 9-0 win against Wofford to open the Wofford Invitational.

Rutan, a freshman from Columbus North, struck out eight in the victory. She also went 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI at the plate.

On Friday, Rutan went 2 for 3 with an RBI in a 5-0 win against George Mason.

Rutan pitched the final two innings and struck out four to pick up her second win of the season in Saturday’s 7-2 win against Robert Morris. The Colonels also beat George Mason 4-3 on Saturday to improve to 4-0 and capture the invitational title.

For her efforts, Rutan has been named the ASUN Pitcher of the Week.

EKU will play in the South Alabama Invitational Friday through Sunday.

Foster collects 6 hits in opening series

CONWAY, S.C. — Syracuse’s Kenzie Foster recorded six hits over the first five games of her collegiate career, including her first career home run Sunday in a 5-0 win against Campbell on Sunday to conclude Coastal Carolina’s Kickin’ Chicken Classic.

Foster, a freshman from Columbus East, went 2 for 4 with a steal and a run in Friday’s 3-0 win against Bucknell and scored a run in Friday’s 5-4 loss to Coastal Carolina. She went 1 for 2 with two runs in Saturday’s 13-3 win against Campbell.

On Sunday, Foster went 1 for 3 with a sacrifice and a run in a 6-5 loss to George Washington and 1 for 3 with the homer in the 5-0 loss to Campbell.

The Orange (3-2) will play in the Southeastern Louisiana Lion Classic Friday and Saturday.

Taylor helps Panthers to 5-0 start

YOUNGSVILLE, La. — Hannah Taylor helped Eastern Illinois to a 5-0 record Friday through Sunday in its season-opening Mardi Gras Mambo.

Taylor, a freshman from Hauser, stole a base and scored two runs in four appearances as a pinch runner.

The Panthers will play in the San Diego Classic Friday through Sunday.

Wager, McIntosh earn preseason honors

Two former Columbus North baseball players have been selected to their conference’s preseason All-Conference teams.

Tennessee-Martin sophomore pitcher Zach Wager is on the preseason All-Ohio Valley Conference squad. Wager was OVC Freshman of the Year, All-OVC second team and a Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American last season.

Alabama State junior shortstop Kyler McIntosh in on the preseason all-Southwestern Athletic Conference team. McIntosh was a second-team All-SWAC player last season.

UT-Martin opens its season Friday through Sunday at home against Northern Kentucky. Alabama State opens Friday through Sunday at home against Valparaiso.

Schiavello leads Thunder in defeat

Nick Schiavello led Wheaton with 23 points, five assists and two steals and grabbed three rebounds in 39 minutes Saturday in a 72-60 CCIW loss at Elmuhrst.

Ty Ferguson, a freshman from Columbus North, added two points in five minutes for the Thunder.

Schiavello, a senior from North, recorded 13 points and a steal and led Wheaton with five rebounds and four assists in 37 minutes in Wednesday’s 78-71 CCIW win against Carroll (Wisconsin). Ferguson added a rebound and three assists in 15 minutes.

The Thunder (6-17, 5-9) visit Carthage (Wisconsin) on Wednesday.

Lawson helps Hanover to victories

Kylah Lawson recorded nine points and an assist and led Hanover with five rebounds in 15 minutes Saturday in an 86-31 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference win at Defiance.

Lawson, a sophomore from Columbus North, had six points, seven rebounds, an assist and three steals and led the Panthers with two blocked shots in 33 minutes in Wednesday’s 78-73 HCAC win against Rose-Hulman.

Hanover (16-7, 14-2) visits Anderson on Tuesday.

Murphy scores 8 points in ONU win

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. — Daniel Murphy recorded eight points and two rebounds and led Olivet Nazarene with three assists in 16 minutes Saturday in a 100-70 CCAC win against Governors State.

Murphy, a junior from Columbus East, had six points, two rebounds, two assists and a steal in 14 minutes in Wednesday’s 85-82 loss to IU Northwest.

The Tigers (17-7, 11-5) visit Holy Cross (Indiana) on Wednesday.

Barker helps Franklin post wins

Lauren Barker scored six points and had one steal in 30 minutes Saturday in Franklin’s 78-61 HCAC win at Earlham.

Barker, a freshman from Columbus North, recorded two points, six rebounds, two assists and a steal in 17 minutes in Wednesday’s 80-57 HCAC win against Manchester.

The Grizzlies (15-8, 10-6) visit Transylvania on Tuesday.

White nets 6 points in SMW victory

Madison White scored six points in 10 minutes Thursday in St. Mary of the Woods’ 73-68 River States Conference win at IU East.

White, a junior from Columbus North, had one rebound in six minutes in Saturday’s 82-64 RSC win against IU Kokomo.

The Pomeroys (15-9, 10-4) visit IU Southeast on Tuesday.

Greiwe helps IWU to triumph

MARION — Koryn Greiwe, a redshirt freshman from Columbus East, recorded five points, a rebound and a steal in four minutes Wednesday in Indiana Wesleyan’s 81-44 Crossroads League win against Spring Arbor.

The Wildcats (22-2, 13-1) host Taylor on Wednesday.

Barnett, Baker compete at Vanderbilt

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Lipscomb’s Mackenzie Barnett, a junior from Columbus North, finished ninth out of 34 runners in 9 minutes, 30.69 seconds in the women’s seeded 3,000 meters Saturday in Vanderbilt’s Music City Invitational.

Tennessee’s Lily Baker, a freshman from North, finished 39th out of 121 runners in 4:56.05 in the women’s mile.

Lipscomb will compete in the ASUN Indoor Track and Field Championships Friday and Saturday in Gainsville, Florida. Tennesee will compete in Notre Dame’s Alex Wilson Invitational on Saturday.

Kiesler, Kilbarger-Stumpff run in Seattle

SEATTLE — Julia Kiesler, a freshman from Columbus North, led Boise State with a 21st-place finish in the women’s 5,000 meters in 16:16.13 Saturday in Washington’s Husky Invitational.

Colorado’s Reese Kilbarger-Stumpff, a redshirt-freshman from North, finished 45th out of 96 runners in a personal-best 4:08.33 in the men’s mile.

The previous weekend, Kilbarger-Stumpff finished fifth in the 800 in 1:52.29 and 22nd in the mile in 4:19.47 in the Colorado Invitational.

Colorado will compete in the Mines Pre-Conference meet Saturday and Sunday and the Air Force Last Chance meet on Friday. Boise State will compete in the Mountain West Conference meet Feb. 22-24 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
