James MacEgan and his wife, the victims of Thursday’s shooting in a Roseville park, had a strong faith and attended two Catholic churches in Roseville. They were active parishioners and offered themselves to the churches of Santa Rosa and Santa Clara. Many said they will remember MacEgan for his musical talent that he shared liberally with others. “He made music for many years,” Ramon Telles said. Telles was held across from MacEgan’s St. Rose Catholic Church. MacEgan was a member of the choir and led the music in many church celebrations and practices. “We start on Tuesday,” Telles said. “Then he made music in the mountains for four days.” Roseville police said MacEgan and his wife were taken hostage by a suspect Thursday afternoon in Mahany Park. They said that innocent bystanders were caught in the conflict between seven officers and the CHP wanted a man wanted in a felony investigation. Captions do not have a warranty. The spokesman did not provide details on when or where the shooting took place. Police said the officers and Abril, 35, exchanged gunfire and Abril took the couple hostage. They believe April shot MacEgan and his 50-year-old wife. as a CHP officer. The officer is outside the hospital. “Of course we’re praying for her, praying for the family and just knowing that she’s gone but never forgotten,” said Mike BaerBaer, who lives in the same Roseville neighborhood as the MacEgans. They lived there for three decades. Neighbors are devastated. They said they often hear music and laughter from their backyard. “This victim is finished because they did nothing wrong. It shouldn’t have happened to them.” Telles said the church community misses him. “Nobody has a musical talent,” he said. Both St. Rose and St. Clare churches are holding tributes and candlelight vigils to remember MacEgan.
